Before installing the program, check to see that you have QuickTime 2.1, Sound Manager 3.2, "Sound" Control Panel, QuickTime™ PowerPlug (for Power PC users only!) installed in the Extensions Folder located in the System Folder on your hard drive. Also, if you have 32-bit addressing make sure it is turned on (check the MEMORY Control Panel on your system).
If you have older versions of any of these extensions, remove them from your system by dragging them to the Trash or onto the desktop. Also, make sure that the Dynamic Desktop function (if you have one) in your Control Panel is turned off .
QuickTime™ does not run well with virtual memory or programs such as RAM Doubler. Please turn these extensions off before running this CD-ROM.
Proceed with the following installation instructions:
1. Place the Gracelnd compact disc (Disc One) into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Drag the folder called "move this to your hard drive" onto your hard drive.
3. Double-click the folder called "place contents in System Folder" to open it.
4. Drag the contents of the folder to the System Folder on your hard drive.
5. Restart your Macintosh.
To start the program, insert one of the "Virtual Graceland" discs into the CD-ROM drive, double-click the folder you copied to your hard drive (called "move this to your hard drive"), then double-click the Gracelnd icon. (If you want to bypass the credits, hit the space bar at any time during the opening credits and you'll find yourself at the front gates heading up the driveway.)
BRIEF PLAY INSTRUCTIONS
For maximum enjoyment, be sure to connect quality STEREO speakers or headphones to your system.
Virtual Graceland lets you choose between an informative guided tour and an unchaperoned self-guided tour. The full guided tour takes you everywhere in the estate and is available on both discs. The unchaperoned tour allows you to bring down the velvet ropes and get up close and personal with the objects in the room by navigating through the house and grounds. Be aware that you can't take an unchaperoned tour of all the areas on both discs. If you select an unchaperoned tour of an area that is on the other disc, the program will let you know.
In the unchaperoned tour, click when the cursor is a triangle to navigate around an area. As you navigate, stop occasionally and roll the cursor over various objects in the movie. Notice that the cursor will look different when over different parts of the screen. The cursor will become a hand, indicating active buttons -- click there. In some cases when navigating, placing the cursor over the navigation screen will change the cursor to a "+" or "-", indicating that you may click on that navigation screen and zoom in or out.
To move directly to another area of the estate, open the Tourkit window and select the MAP. Click anywhere on the map to be transported instantly to another area.
While on either tour you can turn off the tour guide and the background sounds by selecting the appropriate icon in the Tourkit.
Press CONTROL - Q or CONTROL - . or click the EXIT icon in the Tourkit to quit the program.
TIPS FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE
For better performance, increase the amount of memory allocated to the application. Simply click the "GRACELAND" icon once to select it, then open the FILE menu and select GET INFO. In the "Preferred Size" box, type a larger number to dedicate more memory to the program.
To see how much RAM is available to allocate to "Virtual Graceland," go to the desktop and select ABOUT THIS MACINTOSH under the Apple menu. Check the number labeled "Largest Unused Block." Subtract 300K from that figure to allow enough memory for other computer functions. The number that is left is the amount of memory available for "Virtual Graceland."
Also try setting your monitor to "thousands of colors" or "millions of colors" (using the Monitors control panel under the "Apple Menu"). (Note: when using "millions of colors," the program may run more slowly.)
Other performance issues:
1. If performance of the CD-ROM seems slow, you may want to enable the faster speed settings on your double-, triple- or quad-speed CD-ROM drive. See the documentation for your CD-ROM drive for details on changing the speed settings.
2. Try a lower monitor setting (i.e. reduce colors from millions to thousands or 256 colors) in the MONITOR control panel.
3. If you have less than 8 MB RAM, or still need better performance, try allocating 4 to 8 MB to"Virtual Memory" in the MEMORY control panel.
